Olympian athlete Tooru Oikawa doing some live broadcast with a Q&A, questions are scrolling by on a screen and he or some aide picks some of them to answer, but Oikawa keeps squinting at an obnoxiously repeating question and then suddenly glares at the camera and barks, "TAKERU GET OFF MY Q&A!!"

oikawa takes takeru to an aquarium for his birthday because he knows they do a mermaid show in one of the big tanks. what he doesn’t know is that he ends up more amazed than his nephew when he sees not a mermaid but a merman in the water.

he moves through the fish with insane elegance, his big, muscular body flowing like silk, propelled by a long tail he handles like it’s actually real, its turquoise colour contrasting with his dark skin. no diving googles (tooru thinks it’s for the aesthetic, but his own eyes sting just from thinking), but he is wearing a gold crown entangled in his black hair, matching the bracelet wrapped around one of his thick biceps and the wrist chains.

oikawa can’t take his damn eyes off him because it’s truly hypnotic the way he moves, the way his torso and waist ripples, the way he swings his thick arms to swim. but then tooru feels takeru gently tugging at his hair, and when he looks up, finds a toothy smile and bright sparkling eyes.

“let’s go closer, uncle tooru!”

“what?” tooru blinks, his voice way too high, while takeru kicks his little legs where he sits on his shoulders.

“let's go closer! i wanna say hi!”

“but—”

“do you want me telling everyone you gave me the best gift ever or not?"

and obviously tooru can’t say no to that, being the proud man he is, so he sighs dramatically and drags the both of them to the front row spot a mom with her baby just left.

takeru waves his tiny hand to get the merman’s attention and oikawa almost forgets to breathe when the young boy swims over, bigger, broader, and way more majestic than he looked from three rows back. he smiles at takeru, pressing one hand to the glass and waving with the other. takeru giggles, and tooru glances at his nephew, lips curling into a soft smile when he sees him so excited, trying to make a heart shape with his hands.

then the merman flips onto his back, brings his hands to his mouth and oikawa’s eyes widen as he watches him blow out a stream of bubbles cupped between his palms. the guy fans out his arms just in time to rise the bubbles in two perfect columns, shaping into a heart right there in the water.

takeru squeals, just like all the other kids and a few adults, as the merman swims back, beaming with pride and then his big green eyes meet oikawa’s. and oikawa swears his heart skips a beat or two when the merman winks and smiles at him before drifting up to the surface, out of view.

“soooo cool!!” takeru yells, practically vibrating.

“yeah” tooru whispers, cheeks flushed “super cool.”

what oikawa doesn’t know either is that he’s going to see that same merman again, this time on land, during his first class of junior year, introduced as the teaching assistant iwaizumi hajime.

you’re taking it all in stride, of course. laughing good-naturedly and answering all the questions takeru is grilling you with. you’re perfect, tooru thinks. 

“that’s very sweet of him,” you giggle, reaching over to pinch tooru’s cheek as he hisses at takeru to shut up. 

“i guess,” the little boy makes a face. “i think it’s kinda dumb but he swears you’re his soulmate, so.”

“takeru!” 

“alright, alright, you boys better stop fighting or no dessert,” tooru’s older sister scolds, but she shoots you a warm smile. “takeru, stop terrorizing your uncle and come help me and grandma in the kitchen.”

tooru huffs, red in the face when he stands up from the table and beckons you outside. 

it’s cold outside, but the heat of tooru beside you is enough to keep you warm enough. 

“sorry about my family,” he says sheepishly, toying with the hem of his sweater like an embarrassed schoolgirl. “they can be a bit…much.”

you laugh, taking his fidgety hands in your own. “i think it’s cute. ‘sides, it’s nice to see you all together like this.”

“yeah, i guess. i just—”

he’s cut off when the door opens and takeru stick his head out. “mom’s asking if you wanna stay for dessert?”

“i also asked if you wanna stay forever!” comes a cheery voice from inside. 

you giggle somewhat bashfully, face and heart warm when you take tooru’s hand and head back inside. 

“i think ‘yes’ to both sounds pretty good.”

Iwaizumi's lying on the three-seater sofa, legs up and Takeru's little body on the soles of his feets, laughing and holding tightly to Iwaizumi's safe hands as he swings his little legs and shouts with laughter "I'm an aeroplane, uncle Iwa! I'm flying high and high!"

And Tooru, on the floor, leaning against the one-seater sofa, his legs tucked in and his head resting on his arms crossed over his knees, smiles lovingly. His ears are delighted by the mixture of his nephew's laughter and Hajime's laughter.

He loves how Iwa-chan has always been part of his family, how they have grown up sharing two fathers, two mothers and an older sister. He loves how, in fact, Iwa-chan is family, how he relates his name to that, to home, to warmth, to protection.

I’m back to into Haikyuu!! And before I say anything - I absolutely adore Kageyama. It’s been a minute that have thought about his character/ discussed him. But recently came across some really great character studies of him.

Summary: When Oikawa is asked out by Kageyama for the first time, he turns him down, saying he wouldn't date someone who is so clearly inferior to him. Three years later, after Seijou's loss to Karasuno, Kageyama asks again, and despite not really (read as: absolutely not) wanting to, Oikawa somehow ends up agreeing nevertheless. It might really be time to forget about old grudges and move on. Turns out, it's even harder than he thought it would be.

Translation notes

The title of the chapter 真昼の光 can also be interpreted as "Mahiru's light", so it wasn't easy to decide because we can't tell if the title is meant to have Mahiru's name or the translation of the word 真昼 "mahiru". Regarding the 2ndpage, Mahiru used the word もの (mono) and because it wasn't written in kanji, it can be interpreted either as "things" or "people.

Written with the kanji 者 is mainly used to specify someone's role/characteristic rather than just as a generic term for "person."

I personally think it's weird that 人 (hito) "person" wasn't used. Mahiru's first line could be interpreted as "things" he believes in, but the 2nd one can only refer to people belevng in him.

Because of the panels with Kuro and Tooru, I think in both lines もの is reffering to people.

Tooru likes to make puns which in Japanese are called "dajare" ダジャレ. Tooru makes puns using the structure だけに which translates something like "because…you know?"

The first time he makes a joke was in volume 2, so I'm gonna try explain how it works to understand how I adapted Jun's line, so we have to go back to the early chapters of the manga.

In Japanese he says 強盗めどこに隠れた！？　怖じ気づいたか！？ 叔父だけに！！

The first word 怖じ気 (ojike) means "fear" and the second one means "uncle." The first one has consists of the word "oji", like the word "uncle"

怖じ気づいたか can be translates as "Did you get scared?" but it can also be interpreted like "You took notice of (the) fear? And the last sentence would translate like "Because I'm the uncle, you know?" The wordplay is based on the word "oji" and in those sentences, they translate as "uncle" and "fear". Hopefully I made sense ;;

So, I interpret that he's saying something like "Get it? I'm the uncle (the fear).

"Are you scared of me? Because I'm the uncle! (you know)"

I'm praising the localization, which is rare because most of the manga, especially the early volumes were translated badly, however, I checked to see how his joke was handled.

In my opinion, it was a good call to use the expression "cry uncle". So yeah, I tried my best to explain how those kinds of puns work so that you can understand the one that Jun proposed, who apparently knows about Tooru's puns. Jun says 「雷神だけに」 The first two kanji mean "god of lightning" and the furigana reading is Thor which is Jun's codename and previously it was Tooru's. Even his name was based on Thor.

So, my interpretation is that when Jun is asking Tooru "You're not going to make a joke like "Because I'm Thor", will you?" to which Tooru replies that he won't, I think he's saying that although Mahiru borrowed his power (lightning), making a joke about Thor (himself) wouldn't have been appropriate since Mahiru created light. I'm sorry if I didn't explain very well ;;

Regarding Kuro's line in the last panel, instead of translating the word only in furigana, I used both readings because it was less ambiguous in my opinion. The furigana reads "our", so it would have been "It's not our time" and thus, in order to not give the impression that Kuro wasn't referring only to himself and Tsubaki, I used the other reading too.

So, apparently Sakuya can make clones/illusions of himself but I don't understand how they work in regard to the 5 second part. The name of his ability comes from "The Five Minute Hypothesis" but it was changed to "second". The intended reading in furigana sounds weird because it has the word "yesterday" and "to die" is in the future tense. I haven't found a reference for it, like I expected that it could have been from a novel.

Lastly, in the middle panel, the woman says the word 他人 (tanin) which means "other people" or "strangers", however the furigana reads 人 (hito) "people". Could be a typo or maybe there is a meaning behind it... So yeah, I hope these notes were helpful!

The soft glow of the setting sun bathed the small yard in golden light. Laughter echoed in the air, mingling with the rustling leaves as you sat on a blanket spread across the grass, your husband beside you.

Iwaizumi Hajime leaned back on his elbows, watching with an easy smile as your son, Yuuji, waddled across the grass. The toddler’s giggles were infectious, his tiny hands reaching out for the volleyball Hajime had brought out earlier.

"Look at him go," Hajime said, pride evident in his voice. "He’s got my coordination already."

You chuckled, nudging him playfully. "He also fell on his butt five minutes ago trying to chase a butterfly. He’s got some of my clumsiness too."

Hajime laughed, pulling you closer as you rested your head on his shoulder. It had been two years since you’d said your vows, standing under an arch of flowers with tears in your eyes as Hajime promised to love you forever. Life since then had been a beautiful whirlwind—balancing work, family, and the joy of raising your little boy together.

As if sensing your thoughts, Hajime pressed a kiss to your temple. "I still can’t believe this is real," he murmured. "You, me, Yuuji... It’s everything I ever wanted."

You smiled, your fingers intertwining with his. "Me too."

The sound of a car door slamming broke the serene moment, followed by the unmistakable voice of Oikawa Tooru.

"Your favorite uncle is here!"

You both turned to see Oikawa striding into the yard, his arms laden with gifts and a dramatic flourish in his step.

"You know, he’s not going to remember half of these toys," Hajime called out, smirking.

"That’s not the point," Oikawa retorted, setting the bags down. "I’m here to make memories, Hajime. Memories!"

Yuuji toddled over to him, arms outstretched. "Unka 'Tooru!'"

Oikawa melted instantly, scooping the toddler up and spinning him around. "There’s my little star! You’ve grown so much since I saw you last week!"

"Last week," Hajime muttered, shaking his head.

Oikawa plopped down on the blanket, Yuuji still in his arms. "So," he began, grinning at you and Hajime. "When’s the next one coming?"

You choked on your laugh as Hajime shot Oikawa a warning glare. "We’ll get back to you on that," Hajime said, deadpan.

Oikawa shrugged, completely unfazed. "Well, whenever it happens, I’ll be ready with more gifts. Yuuji can’t be the only future volleyball star in the family!"

"Don’t pressure him, Tooru," you said, laughing as Yuuji grabbed at his uncle’s hair.

"Pressure? I’m inspiring him!" Oikawa replied dramatically, shifting Yuuji onto his lap.

Hajime leaned toward you, his voice low. "Remind me why we let him into our lives?"

"Because he’d show up even if we didn’t," you teased, making Hajime chuckle.

As the sun dipped lower, painting the sky in hues of pink and orange, the four of you sat together, basking in the warmth of family. Oikawa regaled Yuuji with exaggerated stories of his volleyball glory days, Hajime chimed in with sarcastic commentary, and you watched them all with a heart full of love.

It wasn’t the perfect picture—there were occasional late nights, spilled milk, and the chaos of parenthood—but it was your picture. And it was beautiful.

Leaning into Hajime’s side, you sighed contentedly. "Do you think we’ll ever get a quiet moment again?"

He looked down at you, his eyes soft with adoration. "Probably not," he said, kissing your forehead. "But I wouldn’t trade this for anything."

Neither would you.

As Yuuji laughed and reached for the volleyball, with Oikawa egging him on and Hajime’s hand resting on yours, you realized that this was your forever.
